I'm sure you've seen it on the news so I don't need to recap. Dylan, Ann, Abby, and I were actually in chapel at Wheaton College when we received multiple texts with the message: "Mubarak has stepped down!" It was one of those moments where I just sat and wondered at the circumstances that brought me to that place at that time to hear that particular news. Immediately afterwards I spoke in a Third World Politics class with one of my old professors, and right after that I was able to discuss events with friends in the HNGR department. The night before, the Costers had been the special guests at Mennonite Dinner, a weekly meal held by a couple professors at Wheaton. It was really a blessing to be around so many people who cared what was happening in Egypt, were completely caught up on current events, and were eager to discuss the situation with us! I felt supported and validated and encouraged, especially by my professors who were so glad to see me and hear my experiences. What amazing timing!
To back up a little bit, we drove to Wheaton on Thursday so that Abby could have another chance to visit campus, sit in on a class, take a tour, etc. We got there in time for Mennonite Dinner, something that Dylan and I attended during our time at Wheaton. We heard the rumor that Mubarak was stepping down, and then the news that he really wasn't, on Thursday night. Who knew what Friday would bring? Abby and Ann were able to attend a politics class this morning (in which the main topic was Egypt, of course), then we all went on a tour of campus and went to chapel. It was a rhythm and praise chapel, with lots of worship, and there we three were, passing around Ann's phone after she received a text saying Mubarak was leaving!
We only know as much as you know at this point, and have no idea what will happen next. It looks like this was technically a military coup, but things seem pretty stable and they're already talking about moving towards elections as soon as possible. Fortunately, we still have a week to watch how events turn out before we decide whether to take our February 19th return tickets. The next few days should be interesting!
